What Orencia treats
Orencia (abatacept) is a biologic medication used to treat moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in adults and juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) in children aged 2 years and older. It works by modulating the immune system to reduce inflammation and prevent joint damage. Orencia is also used to treat psoriatic arthritis in some cases.
Benefits of Orencia
Patients using Orencia often experience significant benefits, including reduced joint pain and swelling, improved physical function, and slowed progression of joint damage. By modulating the immune system, Orencia helps manage symptoms of RA and JIA effectively, improving overall quality of life and mobility. The option of intravenous or subcutaneous administration offers flexibility in treatment regimens.
Possible Side Effects of Orencia
While Orencia is generally well-tolerated, some patients may experience side effects such as headache, nausea, or injection site reactions including redness or swelling. Serious side effects, although rare, can include infections, including upper respiratory tract infections and urinary tract infections, as well as allergic reactions. It is important to monitor for signs of infection and report any unusual symptoms to your healthcare provider.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How Does Orencia Work?
Orencia works by inhibiting T-cell activation, which plays a critical role in the inflammatory process of rheumatoid arthritis. It targets and binds to CD80 and CD86 proteins on antigen-presenting cells, preventing these cells from effectively interacting with T-cells. This interference reduces the activation of T-cells and subsequent inflammation in the joints. Orencia can be administered as an intravenous infusion or a subcutaneous injection, with dosing schedules tailored to the specific condition and patient needs.
Who is Orencia For?
Orencia is suitable for adults with moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis who have not responded adequately to other disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) or biologics. It is also prescribed for children aged 2 years and older with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) who require additional therapy. Additionally, Orencia may be used for patients with psoriatic arthritis if other treatments are not effective or appropriate.
