Infusion Therapy

Leqembi

What Leqembi treats

Leqembi (lecanemab-irmb) is an FDA-approved disease-modifying therapy for Alzheimer’s disease, specifically for patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or mild dementia stage of Alzheimer’s, confirmed to have amyloid pathology. Leqembi works by targeting and reducing amyloid-beta plaques in the brain—a hallmark of Alzheimer’s—potentially slowing the progression of the disease.

Benefits of Leqembi

Clinical trials of Leqembi have shown:

  • Slower cognitive and functional decline compared to placebo
  • Reduced amyloid-beta plaque levels in the brain
  • Potential improvement in quality of life and extended independence in early-stage patients

While not a cure, Leqembi represents a meaningful step toward modifying the underlying disease process.

Possible Side Effects of Leqembi

Leqembi is generally well-tolerated, but potential side effects include:

  • Infusion-related reactions (chills, nausea, dizziness)
  • ARIA-E and ARIA-H (Amyloid-Related Imaging Abnormalities—edema or hemorrhage seen on MRI)
  • Headache
  • Confusion or vision changes in rare cases

Patients receiving Leqembi require MRI monitoring throughout treatment and should be screened for APOE4 status, as it may increase the risk of ARIA.
